We are pleased to announce that Erika will join Jason Matsumoto, the producer of The Orange Story, and Karen Su of the University of Illinois Chicago for a panel discussion during the 2018 Association of Asian American Studies conference in San Francisco.
The panel will focus on two stories of departure that serve as entry points into the history of Japanese American incarceration during WWII. It will focus on The Orange Story and “The Little Girl in the Photo,” a non-fictional children’s picture book that Karen is writing about Yuki Hayakawa who is only three years old on the she and her mother depart from Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, to Manzanar. During the panel, Erika will talk about the rationale behind, and development of The Orange Story film, web site, and picture book. The group will discuss how and why the media arts can be powerful educational tools.
